The Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, has charged all Nigerians to ensure that the dignity of the Elderly is upheld and they are not totally neglected, because they are a vital part of the society.
Oba Gbadebo made the charge while welcoming the entourage of the Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria, (COSROPIN), Ogun State Branch, on Tuesday, 6th of October, 2020, at the Ake Palace, Abeokuta.
Speaking further, the Egba Apex Monarch said that the way and manner in which the elderly people are being cared for in Nigeria, needs great improvements and charged all those whom this responsibility is upon, to do it wholeheartedly.
Alake also made reference to the Biblical passage that says “do not forsake me, even when I am Old and Grey-headed,” adding that no offspring should neglect his or her parents.
The Egba Paramount Monarch further expressed his strong support to the COSROPIN Group and charged them to Imbibe quality in all their objectives.
Speaking earlier, Mrs Dupe Oladimeji, the Chairperson of the Group, said that COSROPIN had discovered that there are some important values lacking in the society at large as regarding the care and rights of older persons in Nigeria.
She made reference to other Countries where the old Citizens enjoy numerous privileges that makes one feel great to be old, adding that that the situation in Nigeria is not quite encouraging to the Elderly people.
Mrs Dupe Oladimeji further said that a lot of old people have retired even with businesses and are willing to give their time, substance, and assistance, to make sure that other old people are well taken care of, adding that the COSROPIN Group is readily available to collaborate with such people.
Mrs Oladimeji also disclosed that COSROPIN had come to seek the active involvement of His Majesty, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, as well as solicit with the Ogun State Government to make their dreams and missions a reality.
Speaking in the same vein, the leader of the entourage, Mr Gbenga Gbesan, noted that with the impact of the Covid19 pandemic in various aspects of the world, the next decade would be quite challenging for the elderly in Nigeria.
According to him, this was because the population of elderly people in the Country is rapidly increasing with lack of resources and appropriate preparations to cater for them.
Mr Gbenga further said that plagues that had affected Egbaland in the past did not make so much negative impact as the Covid19 because the nation had an efficient system of administration.
He added that the Government might be slow in their actions towards the old people, because of their various involvements, and that Groups supporting the Senior Citizens might also be slow because they lack the drive and authority, but the COSROPIN Group would always put the Elderly first in all their doings.
Mr Gbenga also disclosed that the Group is not competing with the government, rather, it is complementing the efforts of the government by looking for ways to improve the living conditions of elderly people, as well as the various opportunities that would influence the elderly in Egbaland, and Nigeria as a whole.
Others among the entourage of the Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Elderly Persons in Nigeria, (COSROPIN), Ogun State Branch, was Rev. (Dr) Abiodun Solesi, Dr Temiloluwa Mamorade, Mrs Adebounpe Adekunle, Chief Oluyemi Ladeinde, Pharm.
