A Texas husband and wife, with a combined age of 211, celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary on Sunday.
John Henderson, 106, and his wife Charlotte, 105, of Austin have officially been recognized as the oldest living couple in the world by the Guinness Book of Records.
This weekend, the assisted-living community where they live threw them a party to celebrate their incredible milestone.
To celebrate, John picked up Charlotte in a 1920’s Roadster, just as he did on their very first date together, along with a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
Friends and family gathered at Longhorn Village Retirement Community and toasted the couple alongside plenty of food and a slideshow of photos depicting their eight decades of wedded bliss.
Jason Free helped his great-uncle and great-aunt become officially recognized by Guinness World Records in November as the world’s oldest living couple.
‘They are a wonderful couple, and an example of a very happy couple – glad to be around each other, travel together, and live life,’ Jason told KXAN.
‘They’ll tell you stories of the past, but they don’t dwell on the past,’ he said.
‘They’re just gracious, nice, kind people,’ fellow resident at the home Jim Bissett told KXAN. ‘They’re the salt of the earth.’
Charlotte and John met in class at The University of Texas in 1934.
John was guard for the football team, while Charlotte was taking classes to become a teacher.
The pair married during the Great Depression on December 22nd 1939, just months after the start of World War II.
Times have changed a lot since then; but their love has stood the test of time.
And the secret of a long life and happy marriage?
‘Live life in moderation and be cordial to your spouse,’ John said.
In fact, John is now the oldest living University of Texas football player, and makes sure to attend at least one game every year, a tradition he’s maintained for 84 years.
They are still healthy, and John makes sure he exercises every day.
In 2009, the couple moved to Longhorn Village, a senior assisted living complex associated with the university’s alumni group.
The couple will officially mark their 80 years of wedded bliss on December 22nd while John will celebrate his 107th birthday on Christmas Eve.
