Our changing culture

Nigeria is a country with a rich and diverse culture, and its values have evolved over time. In the past, Nigerian values were largely shaped by traditional African culture, which emphasized communalism, respect for elders, and religious faith. However, in recent decades, these values have been challenged by the forces of globalization and modernization.

One of the most significant changes in Nigerian values has been the increasing emphasis on individualism. In the past, people in Nigeria were more likely to place the needs of the community above their own personal needs. However, as Nigeria has become more urbanized and people have become more exposed to Western culture, there has been a growing emphasis on individual achievement and self-expression.

Another significant change in Nigerian values has been the decline of traditional religious beliefs. In the past, most Nigerians were devoutly religious, and their values were shaped by their religious beliefs. However, in recent decades, there has been a decline in religious observance in Nigeria, and this has led to a shift in values. For example, there is now more emphasis on materialism and hedonism, and less emphasis on spiritual and moral values.

Of course, not all Nigerian values have changed. Some values, such as respect for elders and family, remain strong. However, the overall trend is towards a more individualistic and secular society. This is a complex and dynamic process, and it is still too early to say what the long-term impact will be.

Here are some of the specific ways in which Nigerian values have changed over the last 30 years:

  • There is a greater emphasis on individualism. People are more likely to put their own needs and interests ahead of the needs of the community.
  • There is a decline in traditional religious beliefs. People are less likely to attend religious services or follow religious rules.
  • There is a greater emphasis on materialism and hedonism. People are more likely to focus on acquiring material possessions and enjoying themselves.
  • There is a decline in respect for elders. Younger people are less likely to defer to the authority of their elders.
  • There is a greater acceptance of diversity. People are more likely to be open to different cultures and ways of life.

These are just some of the ways in which Nigerian values have changed over the last 30 years. It is important to note that these changes are not uniform across the country. There are still many people in Nigeria who hold traditional values, and the pace of change is different in different parts of the country. However, the overall trend is towards a more individualistic and secular society.
